SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence in Springfield kicked off its Ready Set Read program Tuesday evening.

The initiative encourages students to take part in a challenge to read for 20 minutes each day.

Local authors read to the students and the students led their own poetry slam!

“Making reading something that’s fun – like a fun activity; not just homework, not just something you have to do, but that you can get lost in it,” said Lynnette Johnson, a local author.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno spoke at Tuesday night’s event, on the importance of reading every day.
