Massachusetts Charter Public School Association (MCPSA) Executive Director Tim Nicolette issued the following statement today in response to the release of statewide Spring 2026 MCAS scores by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education:

“Spring 2026 MCAS data, released today, show that, while there is much more work to do, students attending charter public schools are making meaningful academic progress.

Of the 14 school districts that have erased learning deficits in grades 3-8, in both English and math, compared to 2019 scores, four are charter public schools: Benjamin Banneker Charter Public School (Cambridge), Excel Academy Charter School (East Boston), Libertas Academy Charter School (Springfield), and New Heights Charter School of Brockton.

Moreover, of the 11 districts that have met or exceeded their 2019 English and math performance in grade 10, four are charter public schools: Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School (Worcester), Codman Academy Charter Public School (Boston), Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (Malden), and Pioneer Charter School of Science (Everett).

Six Commonwealth charter public schools were named “Schools of Recognition” by the state: Berkshire Arts and Technology Charter Public School (Adams), Boston Preparatory Charter Public School (Boston), Collegiate Charter School of Lowell (Lowell), Libertas Academy Charter School (Springfield), Mystic Valley Regional Charter School (Malden), and Rising Tide Charter Public School (Plymouth).

At the same time, it is also critically important to recognize that the path to recovery is ongoing and will require continued intensive efforts. Charter public schools across the Commonwealth are committed to providing high-quality, rigorous educational opportunities, rooted in affirming environments, enabling every student to achieve at the highest level.

Today’s academic outcome data helps schools identify what practices are working and where they can and must improve. Our schools will utilize this data as well as their flexibilities and autonomies to continue to propel rapid academic growth through proven strategies, such as rigorous curricula, evidence-based instructional practices, extended learning time, intentional and ongoing assessment, data-driven targeted interventions and individualized instruction, and professional development and supports for educators.

Massachusetts charter public schools remain fiercely committed to ensuring each and every student has the high quality academic experiences needed to prepare them for success in college, career, and civic life.”
