Several students from the River Valley Charter School in Newburyport walked away with awards at the 2011 Middle School Model United Nations Conference in Boston.

The River Valley students were among more than 330 middle-schoolers from 22 schools who gathered to debate current global challenges at United Nations Association of Greater Boston's annual conference at Northeastern University.

Student delegates took on the role of diplomats from 55 nations including Egypt, Bolivia and Sudan, and represented their countries in four United Nations committees, including the UN Security Council and Human Rights Council. Students engaged in debates, alliance building, strategic negotiations and resolution writing focused on pressing current global issues from the Arab Spring, access to clean water, child marriage as well as other issues.

River Valley students won awards on three of five different committees formed at the conference.
