Public hearing invites comments on proposed UP Academy Charter School in Springfield

The state has scheduled a public hearing on Thursday at the Brightwood Branch Library, located at Chestnut Accelerated Middle School, to consider comments regarding a proposed new charter school in Springfield being pursued by the Boston-based UP Education Network.

The hearing is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m., at the library's meeting room at the school, at 359 Plainfield St. It is sponsored by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

It is the first hearing of four statewide to consider final applications submitted for four new charter schools in Massachusetts.

In Springfield, the nonprofit UP Education Network is proposing to transform a city middle school into a district-run Horace Mann charter school. The school is proposed to open in 2016, with a maximum enrollment of 800 students.
