Background on Brooke
Founded in 2002, Brooke Charter Schools is a network of college preparatory public schools with five campuses in Boston. Brooke currently serves 1,899 students in grades K-11 and will grow to serve 2,200 students in grades K-12 by 2023.
Named after the late Senator Edward W. Brooke, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, our strategy is to focus relentlessly on developing excellent teaching. Reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve in Boston and Chelsea, 56% of Brooke students self-identify as Black, 34% as Latino, 6% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 2% Native American or multiracial. About three-quarters of Brooke students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last several years, Brooke students have set a new bar for what is possible in urban public education, consistently outperforming their peers in Boston Public Schools, and producing academic achievement results among the highest in the state.
The Associate Teacher Role
Our Associate Teaching Corps is a team of urban educators committed to closing the achievement gap. Associates are paired with mentor teachers and receive intensive professional development including weekly seminars focused on the fundamentals of classroom management, daily observations of highly skilled teachers, and frequent coaching conversations. Associates begin their Brooke experience with nearly a month of full-time professional development. Once school starts, Associates spend most of their time observing lead teachers and gradually take on an increasing amount of classroom management through leading small portions of instruction. By the spring, adequately progressing Associates teach for a full period each week. Like all Brooke staff, Associates receive frequent feedback: in addition to near daily coaching conversations with their mentors, Associates receive formal evaluations at the end of each month based on detailed rubrics that outline essential skills and a mastery timeline.
This is an ideal position for individuals who have limited experience leading their own class, but who are looking for a rigorous and supported teaching position that provides opportunities to work intensely with students. Our goal is to provide sufficient experience, professional development, and mentorship to prepare our Associate Teachers to become lead teachers.
After a selective hiring process, Associate Teachers:
- are placed on grade-level teams for a year-long apprenticeship in great teaching
- participate in targeted professional development and co-planning sessions
- provide one-on-one tutoring; serve as scholar advisors; help with lesson planning and curriculum preparation; and ultimately lead their own classes and lessons
After a year of close mentorship, the majority of our Associate Teachers are ready to take on their own classroom as a full-time teacher.
